Summer is now here so I am going to cover information about how important sensible sun exposure is for our health and wellbeing.  If you didn’t know sunlight on our skin is converted to Vitamin D and so getting the right amount of sun at certain times of the day can help improve many problems.

We see lots of blood tests that show low levels of Vitamin D and it seems to be more widespread than previously because the slip, slop, slap message has scared everyone into avoiding the sun.

Sunshine in moderation is the key – staying out too long and getting sunburnt is not the recommendation so here are some guidelines on how to get the Vitamin D that you need.

Best times of the day are mornings and late afternoons when the sun is not as strong overhead.  If you are still out during this time, covering up with a hat, sunglasses and long, loose-fitting clothing will protect you from the harsh rays.  If you have olive or dark skin you will need more time in the sun as your skin takes longer to convert the sunlight.

Also, people who take cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are also prone to Vitamin D deficiency as cholesterol in the skin helps convert the sunlight into this important vitamin.  When the body lacks Vitamin D it does not produce enough calcium and phosphorus so muscle pain, nervousness, cramps, and numbness can also occur.
