Dr. Andrew Arnold says, ‘We are living in the days of staring at screen after screen. ‘
We can blame these changes on recent gadgets like cell phones. If you want to read clearly from these small screens, it is important to look at these as close to your eyes as possible.
We know that this may be harmful to certain parts of our body, but how? As you can see in the pictures, as you go forward a little bit more, muscles on your posterior neck must get loaded with more momentum to hold your head on the spine. In addition, your natural spinal curve would disappear which is imperative to keep our body functions and as a result will increase more load on your discs between spinal segments, vertebrae, and decrease the spinal stability by extending the facet joints behind disc joint.
Its simplified picture, the actual calculation should be different from the diagrams since the boundary condition (B.C.) is not exactly right because the point at the bottom can be fixed in the human body and also there are other structures supporting the head besides just the cervical spine.
Consequently, the increased load results in more work for our muscles, in order to hold the cervical spine and because of this leads to tightness or muscle wasting in the case of a long period of exertion. These kinds of muscle problems trigger not only the neck but shoulder pain and possibly refer pain to your head also. This is due to the chain reaction of compensational response. In addition, it would cause the cervical spine to lose its natural C curve, convex forward, resulting in your upper thoracic spine working harder to sustain head weight (which then impact your mid and lower back).
Hypothetically, the mechanical headache stems from structural problems such as the ones mentioned above and are caused due to our neuron (Trigeminocervical neuron) located in the upper neck region receiving the pain signals from the upper neck, back of head, forehead, and face. This is the exact reason why chiropractic treatments for neck areas are working well for patients who experience headaches.
Again the causes of headache and neck pains are very complex and not always linked to poor posture and muscles on the neck and shoulder. Musculoskeletal issues are most likely caused by an unbalanced posture triggering over-exertion of certain muscles at the expense of others.
I recommend checking in with your local Chiropractor to get this checked out.
