Many people experience some sort of reaction after their first Chiropractic adjustment.

This can be disconcerting and misleading but doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not on track.

Let me explain.

Think of this. The garden tap is on full, but the hose is kinked. You’re unaware of the pressure build-up when you go to unkink the hose. There is a sudden surge of water.

The pots on the stove boiling, the lids rattling. You don’t know what’s in the pot when you lift the lid. The lid flies off, and the contents spray everywhere.

Pain is the very last ‘cab off the rank’. Our bodies have an amazing capacity for compensating and coping with all sorts of insult until a point.

Eventually, it will let you know there’s a problem however, this could be a long way down the track.

You may be deceived into thinking your problem only started a few weeks ago however, after seeing x-rays it becomes evident in fact, it’s been around for quite some time.

There are many examples of this in medicine. A breast lump may appear after a quite some time of altered cellular activity you were unaware of.

So what I’m saying is, pain is misleading, you’re symptoms are misleading, they do not represent the whole picture.

Now let’s return to your healing reaction.

You’re just had your first Chiropractic adjustment and you are either feeling better, worse, same or different.

In all cases you are most likely still improving and on your way to better health and resolved symptoms however because everyone feels pain differently, your body may interpret improvement in other ways.

Some people simply improve, slow and steady whilst others have a reaction.

Let’s talk about the latter.

Most likely your recent symptoms relate to something much deeper. Chiropractic adjustments work in an opposite way to say anti-inflammatories. They tend to get behind the problem and push it outwards.

Dr. Andrew Arnold says, ‘An adjustment may provoke something deeper surfacing, and this may be uncomfortable.’

Don’t be alarmed. Your body is doing exactly what it was built to do. Think of a detox program where your body starts to rid itself of toxins. You often feel less than well for a time before coming out of the other side.

Chiropractic adjustments are very powerful and may cause you to go into a type of detox.

In my experience, this occurs with the first visit and much less thereafter.

Keep in touch with your Chiropractor during this time. There are many ways to soften the gradient so you can weather the healing process as smoothly as possible.
