Dr. Andrew Arnold says, ‘More than one-third of fertility problems in couples are due to poor sperm health.’
Even if it is not the main factor, majority of men can make significant improvements to the health of their sperm thereby increasing chances of conception. Most problems in sperm health are very simple and treatable. Risk factors that lead to unhealthy sperm include:
- smoking, alcohol and other drugs.
- being overweight/ underweight.
- chemicals and heavy metals.
- overheating (sauna, spas etc)
- tight clothing.
- riding a bike.
- poor diet.
All of the above risk factors can effect four key sperm parameters.
Low sperm count: More sperm the more chance they have of reaching the oviducts.
Morphology: Normal shape and size have the best chance of making it to the oviducts.
Motility: Sperm that moves fast, strong, progressive and forward have the best chance of reaching the ovum. Sperm motility is reliant on 1) energy and 2) structure.
Integrity: Stable and intact chromosomes will ensure the successful fusion of the gametes. The integrity of sperm and its ability to withstand damage to the DNA is important for a successful pregnancy.
At Cranbourne Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre our Naturopaths offer 4 areas of treatment:
Protection: Antioxidants offer the best protection. Such as selenium, Vit C, E, Polyphenols (found in green tea) Grape seed extract also has been found to improve sperm count.
Support: by supporting spermatogenesis with key nutrients such as zinc, folic acid, B6, B12. Also supporting the immune directly supports spermatogenesis.
Strength: Carnitine is one of the major energy-supplying nutrients for sperm health as is CoQ10 needed for sperm energy and motility.
Providing treatment that supports overall sperm health is the best approach, rather than only addressing one issue, as sperm parameters are heavily connected.
