Are you suffering from both neck and low back pain?

Do you have head and neck symptoms whilst at the same time, experience low back pain?

Have you had lots of tests to no avail?

It’s possible you have, what Chiropractor’s call, “Cord Pressure Syndrome’.

Firstly don’t be alarmed! This is not related to pathology or anything nasty. It’s a functional phenomenon related essentially to stress.

Let me explain.

The spinal cord is protected by 3 main layers, the outer of which is called the ‘dura’. This layer is attached to the very top of the neck and the base of the spine, the sacrum. When you bend and extend the actual spinal cord moves within the boney vertebral column. In fact, it moves up to 5 cm.

From time to time a process called ‘tethering’ can occur.

This is when the movement of the spine within the column doesn’t work fluidly.

Tethering can occur anywhere along the spinal column. It is caused by a variety of things however, the common denominator is inflammation. When a spinal joint is sprained this creates inflammation. This then leads to swelling which causes the joint to not work properly. The movement of the spinal cord and nerves become negatively affected. This then leads to pain and possibly referred pain but also helps create ‘Cord pressure syndrome’.

Furthermore, stress whether it be, physical, mental-emotional or chemical can lead to the cord becoming tensioned at either end. This is another form of tethering also known as ‘Dural tension’.

At Cranbourne Family Chiropractic and Wellness Ctr, we see a variety of symptoms and signs including but not limited to:

  • Headaches or Migraine
  • Poor concentration
  • Poor memory
  • A general feeling of being out of sorts
  • Dizzy
  • Lightheaded
  • Emotional with no apparent reason
  • Generalized Low backache.

As you can appreciate when your spine is under tension after a while this can lead to neurological fatigue.

Dr. Andrew Arnold says, ‘This is where the diagnosis is critical. The Chiropractor needs to know what to adjust or manipulate and when otherwise, you may experience some undesirable side effects.’

These may include, an increase in any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned here.

The bottom line is, your Chiropractor can quickly and effectively manage this condition and with the correct home advice, you will be on your way to feeling better really fast.
