It is no fun living with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  Just ask anyone with the condition. Additionally, other people including employers, friends, and family often don’t understand the condition and do not know how to help.  In fact, they may even be unable to believe that the sufferer is truly unwell and may be seeking attention.

Over the last few months, a couple of my Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia patients have been hospitalized with sudden very painful chest pain.  The hospitals could find no cause.  It seems this is becoming more common with these conditions.  The hospital staff may accuse the patient of attention seeking and wasting public resources.  Of course, this just adds to the frustration of the patient.  It can also add to the depression and anxiety that is also present.

What would you do if you had or were with someone with severe Chest Pain?

Simple isn’t it.  You go to the hospital to make sure it is not a heart attack.  It could be lots of other things, but a heart attack needs to be ruled out.  Then other possible causes can be checked for.

However, if you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia (often both occur together), you may actually be having an attack of Costochondritis.  This occurs when the cartilages which join the chest rib bones to the sternum have inflammation.  Sometimes, there is discernable swelling, and sometimes not.

If alerted, a doctor will be able to distinguish costochondritis from a heart attack by doing a physical examination of the costal cartilages.  This helps because, now the doctor may still choose to rule out a heart attack, but will be able to reassure the patient on the nature of the of the pain.
