Dr. Andrew Arnold talks about the many other benefits of calcium you may not have considered.
Calcium is a major component of bone, which means if there is a calcium deficiency, this will lead to decreased bone density leading to a weakened skeletal structure leading to weakened resistance to gravity.
Calcium is not only for the bone. It is also necessary to help blood sugar regulation with diabetics, healthy blood vessels, prevention of obesity and depression, etc. Calcium intake helps insulin release, a hormone essential in decreasing blood sugar levels. If your calcium levels are inadequate, the body draws it from the bone. A lack of calcium can then lead to high blood pressure or hardening of blood vessels, increased appetite and up and down emotions. So kids not getting enough Calcium can have behavioral issues.
It is recommended that we need to take over 700mg a day. Milk, cheese, yogurt, anchovy, dark green leaves are good choices. Calcium must be combined with Vitamin D as it helps absorption of calcium in the intestine.
You need to avoid instant foods like sodas, coffee, burgers, pizza which are high in phosphorus. This prevents the absorption of calcium.
